Secretary to the Ministry
Ministry of Wildlife & Forest Resources Conservation was established (4th March 2022) as per the Extra Ordinary Gazette Notification No. 2270/14 dated 8th March 2022. The Portfolio of this Ministry holds by Hon. Vijitha Herath, M.P. while Mr. B.K. Prabath Chandrakeerthi (Attorney at law) is the Secretary of the Ministry.
Sinharaja and Other Forests
A bio diversity hot spot, Sinharaja rain forest was designated as a Biosphere reserve in 1978 and world heritage sitein 1988, by UNESCO.
Sri Lankan Mammals
Sri Lanka is a home to roughly 123 species of mammals of which 16 are endemic. Sri Lankan Leopard, Asian Elephants and bears can be seen in following parks.
Sri Lankan Birds
Sri Lanka is a home for vibrant and colourful birds, total numbered 492, breeding residents 219 and endemics 34.
Sri Lankan Fresh Water Fish
Sri Lanka has 82 species of indigenous fresh water fish of which 55% are endemic.visitors can observe beautiful fishes while trekking in jungle pathways, in Sinharaja, Knuckles ect.
Whale and Dolphin Watching
Sri Lanka is a hotspot for whales and dolphins. The most frequently targeted Whale species is the Blue Whale.
Corals around the island
Corals live in colonies consisting of many individuals (polyps). Coral reefs support for spiny lobsters, shrimps and crabs and marine flora such as sea grasses and algae.
Turtle Hatcheries
A turtle hatchery is the place where the sea turtles swim and return back to hatch their eggs and after hatchery authorities take care of the hatched.
Adventure Trekking
There are 15 trekking paths in Sri Lanka. Visitors can entertain with natural environment and adventurous experience.
Sri Lankan Butterflies
Sri Lanka houses 245 species of butterflies with 23 endemics and 76 threatened nationally. Butterfly - Ceylon Rose is designated as critically endangered.
Sri Lankan Reptiles
High number of endemic species are found among Reptiles. Total out of 251 species, 166 species are endemic, 84 species are indigenous and 1 species is introduced.
Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
Largest herd of captive elephants in the world. Roaming elephants in the field, bathing elephants in the river and fondling babies etc, gives you unforgettable memories.
Dehiwala Zoological Garden
Dehiwala zoo is in Colombo suburbs. It comprises of mesmerizing landscape rich with lush greenery, water bodies, lawns and pathways. Mainly the zoo serves as an education centre for children from kindergarten to universities. It is a nice location for a family leisure day.
Pinnawala Zoo
Beautifully landscaped Pinnawala zoo houses animals in spacious areas. The zoo is a preferred location for photographs.
Safari Park Ridiyagama
A unique drive through experience through animal world. You can closely observe the animals in their near natural environment with natural behavioral patterns.
State Timber Corporation – showrooms
It is the place where you can find furniture with quality furnish and majestic appearance.
The Ministry has been established on the purview of fostering bio diversity by conservation of Wildlife & Forest and expanding natural forest cover through environmental sensitive forest plantations and conservation of natural environment of wildlife.
A special incident faced by a wild officer is discussed here. In addition, a detailed account of the park / sanctuary where the incident had occurred is also discussed aiming to provide knowledge to school &university students and general public.
