Inauguration of Small Animal Zone and Center for Animal Conservation and Migrant Bird Rescue

On the occasion of World Animal Day – (October 04), the National Zoological Department is going to open the second part of Ridhiagama Safari Park, Hambantota, consisting of 34 acres to the public.

Sri Lanka’s first Safari Park, with about 500 acres and has 13 zones for different types of animals. Accordingly, the second part, small animal kingdom consists of 03 zones, in which there is a zone for herbivorous animals such as elk, barking deer, and mouse deer, as well as a zone built for children to have fun with pets. Also, priority is to be given to opportunities such as giving food to pets and taking pictures with animals. Apart from this, an animal breeding and conservation center/migratory bird rescue has also been established and it is said that it will not be opened for visitors.

Program schedule

9.15 a.m. – Reception of visitors and ushering them to the Small Animal Area (Reception by Director General, Director Operations, Deputy Director, Veterinary Officer in charge.

9.30 am – Opening of the small animal zone – by Hon. Minister

Issuance of First entry ticket – by Director General to Hon. Minister

10.00 am – Opening of the open Butterfly Garden and tree planting

10.15 am- Inauguration of the Animal Conservation and Migratory Bird Rescue Centre.

10.30 am – Arrival of guests at the function and serving refreshments

10.45 a.m. – Welcome speech and describing the objectives – by Director General

10.55 a.m. – Explanation of the objectives of the Animal Conservation and migratory  Bird Rescue Center – by Prof. Sevvandi Jayakodi

11.05 a.m. – Speech by the President of the Young Zoologists Association

11.15 a.m. –Granting first Membership for Safari Park Branch of the Young Zoologists Association – By Secretary to the Ministry of Wildlife & Forest Resources Conservation

11.15 a.m.- Speech by Honorable Minister, Agriculture and Wildlife & Forest Resources Conservation, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera

11.35 a.m.- Vote of thanks

11.40 a.m.- End of the program
