International Sloth Day – October 20

October 20 is International Sloth Day, a day to honor this adorable slowmoving, treedwelling, and leafeating mammals and to celebrate these enigmatic creatures and raise awareness for their six species, some of which are critically endangered. International Sloth Day was established in 2010 by AIUNAU, an animal welfare group based in Colombia.

The Sloths are mostly found in tropical rain forests of Central America and South America.

Sloths spend most of their lives hanging upside down from tree branches.   They eat, sleep, mate and give birth upside down in the tree. Male Sloths are solitary shy animals. Sloths are nocturnal. Sloths are surprisingly good at swimming.

Sloths have two layers of fur, which harbors a variety of symbiotic algae, fungi, beetles and other insects. The algae on the sloth’s fur give it it’s characteristic green colour and helps the sloth camouflage itself in thick vegetation.
