International Wombat Day – October 22

October 22nd is an annual celebration day of the adorable, chunky, bear like wombat. The human beloved, large, stocky wombat is a kind of mammal, marsupial native to Australia, related to koalas, kangaroos, and Tasmanian devils. They are almost one meter in length with small, stubby tails and weigh between 20 -30 Kg. The babies remain in the mother’s pouch for the first five months of their lives.

Wombats are burrowers, nocturnal and herbivores. Even if their population is not endangered, wombats suffer habitat loss. Plus, the introduction of non-native species in Australia led to competition over food. In this case, wombats compete with non-native herbivores such as rabbits, cattle, sheep, and goats. They are also hunted for fur or simply because they disrupt farmers.

The main purpose behind observing International Wombat Day is to celebrate the existence of these amazing animals and to prevent them from going extinct.
